US Boxing star Floyd Mayweather has heaped praises on Connor McGregor as the Knockout version of himself. The American boxing legend opened up to comedian Kevin Hart about his career whilst the pair soaked in ice baths. One of the subjects they discussed was Mayweather’s stoppage win over the Irishman back in August 2017. Floyd Mayweather (left) spoke to comedian Kevin Hart (right) about his career
The pair spoke about a number of topics including the 2017 fight against Conor McGregor And despite the build-up packed with animosity, manufactured or otherwise, Mayweather was effusive in his praise for the ‘Notorious’ ‘McGregor is the Caucasian Floyd Mayweather, you know, he’s a knockout version, he’s a hell of a knockout version. I take my hat off to him, he’s a dog. ‘I wanted the man to have a career after me, it sounded good for him to say (that he thought the stoppage was early),’ he said on cold as balls all-stars.
After dismantling MMA fighter Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition at the end of last year, rumours are persisting about whether the retired 50-0 fighter will come out to compete again. He has flirted with a move into MMA and again spoke about that possibility, though in reality, he would stand almost no chance against a martial artist. Anything is possible, I could go get a deal right now from the UFC, three or four fight billion dollar deal if that’s what I wanted. ‘I’m going, to be honest, my life is great, smart investments. I can buy whatever I want to buy every month,’ he added. Despite the ‘Money Man’ image, Mayweather comes from humble beginnings and opened up on his early struggles.
Mayweather believes McGregor is like the knockout version of himself ‘It was a long journey, I come from a fighting family, seven of us in one bedroom in Jersey. Dad was a hustler, former fighter and hustler, Mom had it extremely hard but we made it happen. ‘From day one I knew it, I didn’t get into boxing for the fame. I saw my mother in a nursing home, she was barely making ends meet and my Dad was in prison so I rolled the dice. ‘I was in Atlanta right after the Olympic Games, I got a call from Top Rank in Las Vegas. They cut a six-figure cheque and within a year and a half, I was world champion. ‘From the first time I stepped into a boxing gym, my Dad used to say, the less you get to hit the longer you’ll be able to last and I was able to fight professionally for 21 years. They keep calling the shoulder roll the ‘Philly shell’ and that’s called the Mayweather defence,’ he boasted.
The MMA star was impressive but ultimately succumbed to the boxer in their Las Vegas fight With masterful defence, Mayweather has rarely been troubled in his two decades fighting. But he did name-check Manny Pacquiao as one of his more challenging opponents.’I’ve been in fights when in the third or fourth round I know it’s going to be a rough night. One of the best I faced was Manny Pacquiao, he’s a future Hall of Famer. I kept my distance and then just kept turning him,’ he reflected. There has been talk of a rematch with the Filipino but it seems Mayweather is content to enjoy the spoils of his career from the safety of retirement.
